New Cinematographers

Based on extensive interviews and research, this book looks at the work of six of the most important cinematographers of recent years from around the world. For each cinematographer, there is a detailed discussion of their most significant films, ranging in style from lavish Hollywood blockbusters like Gladiator, Hannibal, Seven and Alien Resurrection to innovative independent films such as Buffalo ’66, Delicatessen, Elephant, The Hours and Lost in Translation. By interviewing each cinematographer, the author has been able to find out exactly how individual scenes were shot, what lighting and other equipment was used, and how certain visual effects were achieved, as well as getting a insider’s view of what it is like to work on major films with high-profile directors and actors. A wealth of unpublished material: storyboards, sketches, annotated screenplays, props, location shots and lighting diagrams, together with many stills from each film which have been carefully chosen to emphasize the specific points being discussed.
