Even as the number of people identifying as LGBTQ+ increases, we find our bookshops, bars and clubs closing at an alarming rate. Following a year when nobody has been able to gather in a physical space, Daisy Jones, author of All The Things She Said (Hodder & Stoughton), Laura Kay, author of The Split(Quercus), and Malinda Lo, author of Last Night at The Telegraph Club (Hodder & Stoughton), discuss their own experiences of queer spaces, from London to Sheffield to San Francisco, and whether online spaces hold the answer to safe events.

Queer Activism with Okechukwu Nzelu, Jamie Windust and Juno Roche – Thursday 17th June at 7pm
2020 and 2021 so far have been years of protest and unrest, with marches and demonstrations, at the same time as many of us have been encouraged to stay inside. Debut author of The Private Joys of Nnenna Maloney (Dialogue Books), Okechukwu Nzelu, joins multi-genre author of Queer Sex (Jessica Kingsley Publishers), Juno Roche, and Jamie Windust, author of In Their Shoes (Jessica Kingsley Publishers), a pioneering memoir of non-binary life, to discuss the past and present of queer activism and its representation in, or erasure from, literature.

Queer History with Julie Cohen, Robert Jones, Jr. and Jenn Shapland – Thursday 24thJune at 7pm
Queer history has not always been told or recorded and sometimes it falls to authors to reimagine and re-record what’s missing. Robert Jones, Jr., author of The Prophets (Quercus), Julie Cohen, author of Spirited and The Two Lives of Louis and Louise (Orion), and Jenn Shapland, author of My Autobiography of Carson McCullers (Little, Brown) will discuss these issues and the role that books play in writing and re-writing the past.

Workshop with Julie Cohen – Saturday 26thJune at 2pm
Hachette Pride will be running a workshop for aspiring novelists with Hachette UK author, Julie Cohen, on Saturday 26th June, on a pay-what-you-can basis. Julie will be demonstrating her method for plotting with Post-Its in this fun, flexible workshop which she has previously used to help hundreds of writers throughout the UK and Europe.

Despite Young Adult (YA) and fantasy fiction being more popular than ever, this isn’t always reflected in mainstream discussions of books and publishing. Hosted by Tazmyn-May Gebbett of @TeaBooksandTazmyn on YouTube, Tanya Byrne, author of Afterlove (Hachette Children’s Group), Adiba Jaigidar, author of The Henna Wars (Hachette Children’s Group), and Natasha Ngan, author of the Girls of Paper and Fire series (Hodder & Stoughton) will discuss and celebrate what these genres can offer queer authors of colour.
