David Sedaris and Ottessa Moshfegh at Foyles
LONDON
29th Aug 2022 7:00 pm
Join us at Foyles for an evening of conversation between the inimitable Ottessa Moshfegh and the much-loved David Sedaris. Ottessa's consistently excellent - and wholly unpredictable - body of work continues with Lapvona, a historical novel that explores hypocrisy, power and savagery in gleefully grim fashion.
Set in the titular medieval fiefdom, Lapvona follows the story of Marek, the abused bastard son of the village shepherd. Under the deceitful governance of Lapvona's lord Villiam (and his lackey Father Barnabas), the villagers struggle through famine and drought, their communal resolve cracking as desperation and unrewarded faith push them to their limits.
As the year progresses, Marek finds himself at the centre of multiple conflicts - between control and chaos, religious fervour and occultism, the laws of man and those of nature - in a building storm that threatens to destroy Lapvona's paper-thin illusions of civility.
In celebration of this mesmeric new novel from "one of the most original and astute young novelists working today" (The Daily Telegraph), we will be welcoming Ottessa to discuss Lapvona with her long-time fan, David Sedaris. Humourist and writer, David is the author of the best-selling works: Calypso, Theft By Finding and, most recently, Happy-Go-Lucky, which was published in June. Doors will open from 6:30pm.
