Belfast, 1940.

Áine Moore is a community lay midwife, taking great joy in helping women in her poor Belfast neighbourhood through childbirth. For her best friend’s brother, Matty Canavan, life is also going well: he’s an apprentice decorator with great prospects – and he’s finally worked up the courage to ask Áine, his childhood sweetheart, to be his girl.

But one spring morning, as they walk among the bluebells on Belfast’s Black Mountain, both of their lives change forever: they are spotted holding hands despite being unmarried – giddy in young love – and by the end of the day, Áine has been locked away in a penitent home – a Magdalene Laundry.

Overnight, Áine is forced to confront everything she’s ever known: why is she being punished like this? Why is punishment only for her, a girl? And, most heartbreaking of all, will Matty move on and forget about her while she’s locked away?

But while Áine gets through her days by using her midwifery skills to help the women in the mother and baby home, little does she know that on the outside, Matty is fighting for her, too . . .

Will Matty be able to help Áine escape before all hope is lost – so they might finally be together?
