Embark on an adventure through time, space, and culture―all by speaking a different language.
For anyone who’s ever dreamed of learning another language, polyglot Arieh Smith, known online as Xiaomanyc, proves you don’t need perfect grammar (or a plane ticket) to unlock human connection and expand your mind. From ordering food in Wolof in Harlem’s Little Senegal to being welcomed into a Maasai village in Kenya, navigating the Amazon rainforest with the Waorani to grappling with the mind-bending complexity of Navajo and Cree, even attempting to communicate with bonobos and dolphins, Smith shows how a willingness to speak―awkwardly, imperfectly, and with humility―can open doors most of us never realize exist.
This isn’t just a trip around the globe; it’s a radical reframing of what it means to learn a language. Blending memoir, cultural exploration, and practical insight, Smith dismantles the myth that you must be “good at languages” to use them. Along the way, he invites readers to rethink how they see strangers, differences, and intelligence itself, human or otherwise. Beyond Words is a joyful, eye-opening reminder that the world is communicating with us all the time, and that by daring to speak back, we don’t just learn new words―we learn how to belong.
