Marco van Basten is a legend of the game. In UEFA Euro 1988 he scored one of the greatest goals ever seen in winning Netherlands’ only major title. At Club level he was at the vanguard of AC Milan’s golden era, winning three Serie A titles and two European Cups. He won the Ballon D’Or three times and was named FIFA player of the year in 1992. This followed his Ajax career where he won three Eredivisie titles and the Cup Winners’ Cup trophy. His career was curtailed by an injury in 1993 at the age of 28 and Sky Sports ranked him first in its list of great players who have had their career cut short.
