This is an exciting opportunity to join the Rights Department at Hodder & Stoughton, Headline, John Murray Press and Quercus. The Rights Department is a team of ten people, and we handle a huge variety of rights across a wide range of genres from US and translation through to film and television and we are defined by both our focus on budgets as well as strong emphasis on author and customer care.
What you’ll be doing
The Head of Rights for Headline will be responsible for handling the sale of translation rights in our direct markets and serial across all the Headline divisions. The Headline rights team is hugely successful and you will be working with a variety of authors including brand names such as Harriet Tyce, Emily Gunnis and Simon Scarrow as well as on our non-fiction lists where we look after the Fortnite franchise and a number of highly profitable ideas-led projects. You will work with editorial teams at all stages of the acquisitions process, ensuring that we acquire and exploit the best possible range of rights for our authors, help drive the development of rights-led acquisitions and work with publishers and customers across the world to maximise the value of those rights for our authors.
Who we are looking for
You will create successful growth strategies for rights revenues in each of the publishing divisions you work across. You are likely to have excellent relationships in different rights territories and will develop and exploit commercial opportunities in all these markets.
You will already have a successful career in rights selling with excellent negotiation and communication skills and be used to selling across both commercial and literary fiction and non-fiction lists. Commercial and financially literate, you will build strong relationships with clients, agents and authors and work closely with colleagues in house to provide feedback to editors for new books acquisitions. Headline rights income has grown considerably over the last two years and we are looking for someone to build on and grow this revenue. The successful candidate will report to the Rights Director.

Salary: £44,500+ dependent on experience
