Commissioning Editor, Octopus

Who we are and what we do

The Octopus Publishing Group is an award-winning non-fiction publisher with 17 specialist imprints creating an array of bestselling and award-winning books in every commercial category from food & drink to sport and memoir. Three of our imprints are exclusively dedicated to conscious living – each with a distinct focus. Can you help them grow?

Aster is the home of books that nourish and inspire. Its growing list of bold and beautiful books for the contemporary wellness audience encompasses narrative and illustrated titles in food, fitness, health, beauty, science, mind body spirit, diet, lifestyle and beyond.

Godsfield Press publishes inspirational and authoritative mind body spirit titles covering areas such as spirituality and religion, personal growth and alternative health. It’s best known for the internationally acclaimed Bible series, which has sold more than 6.5 million copies worldwide.

Gaia Books is one of the earliest pioneers of the wellness publishing movement. Its leading range of natural health, mind body spirit, lifestyle and ecology books presents the most rewarding wellbeing traditions and trends from around the world with integrity and accessibility.

What you’ll be doing

You will be commissioning and acquiring a commercially focused list for our dedicated wellness imprints – with a particular emphasis on developing our series publishing and building our eco/environmental/green presence. Keeping a close eye on trends, data and insight, you will identify fresh talent and new opportunities for distinctive publishing that will sell in the UK and worldwide for years to come. Development, pitching, presenting, costing, negotiating, briefing, editing, advising, encouraging, collaborating, reviewing and reporting will feature in your day-to-day as you build your list, publish a dynamic mix of individuals, brands and institutions, and champion each book to its full potential.

Who we’re looking for

The successful applicant will be knowledgeable, persuasive and enthusiastic about wellness, MBS and eco/environmental/green areas – and bursting with ideas for viable new publishing and the audience it will serve. A working understanding of these subject areas is critical, as is the demonstrable ability to position concepts commercially – and then successfully drive them through publication, working effectively with colleagues at all levels within the business and in the world beyond. Biblio, P&Ls and contract negotiation will feature, so experience in handling them will help – ditto a meticulous approach to the necessary detail. The right candidate will enjoy balancing their commercial and creative responsibilities, and bring international awareness, some experience of illustrated books and a real sense of energy and purpose to the role.
