Group Rights Director, Hachette Children’s Group

Who we are and what we do
Hachette Children’s Group is one of the largest children’s publishers in the UK with an excellent track-record in creating bestselling and award-winning books for children of all ages and interests.  We publish many top authors and illustrators including Lauren Child, Cressida Cowell, Jim Field, Kes Gray, Jessica Townsend and Matthew Syed.  Enid Blyton Entertainment is a central part of our portfolio; we own the rights to the vast majority of her works.

What you’ll be doing
We are looking for a talented Group Rights Director to lead our energetic, expanding and successful Rights team.  You will conceive, with the CEO, an ambitious growth strategy for the rights and co-editions business, mentoring, supporting and motivating your team to deliver it.

The successful candidate will engage with the publishing process, from commissioning onwards, to shape content for maximum success in international markets, working to sustain our excellent relationships with Hachette colleagues across the world, as well as with multiple customers and other business partners.  You will also oversee the successful execution of contractual negotiations which may be lengthy and/or complex.

The Group Rights Director has a central role to play in the profitability of HCG, working with the senior management team to ensure the smooth running and commercial success of the division overall. She/he/they must thrive on working collaboratively with other senior colleagues and contributing regularly and robustly to strategic discussion across all business areas.

Who we’re looking for
This is a Senior Management Team role and a high level of strategic leadership, communication and managerial ability is required. Demonstrable recent sales and negotiation experience, detailed knowledge of the domestic and international markets for children’s books (physical and digital), contractual and relevant legal knowledge, a high level of financial skill and the ability to interpret commercial data and trends are also essential.  The Rights team travels extensively; it is expected that the Group Rights Director will undertake international travel as required and lead the plans for the team to do the same.
