Sustainability and ethics

Beyond the ideas and stories we help put out in the world, we also believe that we have a responsibility to make conscious decisions that ensure our use of technology and energy has a positive impact on our creative community and the environment.

Environmental standards

We recognise the criticality of reducing the environmental impact of our supply chain and innovating to move to a circular production model. In 2021, we undertook a full greenhouse gas (Ghg) emission inventory for all Hachette UK operations, including those in our overseas territories, and covering our supply chain impact. Following this assessment, we signed up to the global Science Based Targets initiative, committing to reach net zero carbon emissions by as close to 2030 as possible, and by 2050 at the latest.

Paper purchasing

We are committed to using timber in our paper supply chain from legal, sustainable and well-managed sources, and we support several initiatives and forestry management schemes as part of this, including the Forest Stewardship Council FSC®((FSC licence code FSC C104740) - the leading international forest management certification association. The FSC® has undertaken work to establish a chain of custody from forest to pulp to paper so that publishers can reliably establish the true source of their products and we’re proud to have been working with the organisation since 2011, with nearly 100% of our books now printed using FSC-certified paper stocks.
