Commissioning Editor Hodder and Stoughton

Commissioning Editor

Hodder and Stoughton

Hodder & Stoughton’s fiction team is looking for a new commissioning editor to build their own list of commercial authors across crime, suspense and thrillers. Home to major brands such as John Grisham, Peter Robinson, Stephen Leather and Sabine Durrant, Hodder’s aim is to create bestsellers by providing enthusiastic readers with gripping and fast-paced reads. In this role, you will publish around twenty novels a year, across all areas of crime and thrillers, with a focus on creating digital bestsellers and finding the brands of the future.

This role will suit someone with a commercial eye, excellent market awareness, and the ability to identify new opportunities and commission proactively. You may have some commissioning experience, or come from a marketing or agenting background which has given you a keen understanding of the current crime market and the opportunities afforded by digital in both promotion and sales. You will have excellent author and agent relationships and the knowledge and enthusiasm to plan publishing campaigns that reach readers directly. An understanding of the online market is key, and you will publish your novels with acuity, owning the process from acquisition to publication with creativity and excellence in briefing, copywriting, metadata and liaising with colleagues in other departments. You will be an organised self-starter, able to turn projects round quickly and think strategically before and after a publication to drive sales. You will also drive best practice in digital across Hodder’s frontlist and backlist.
