Hodder Win "Ugly" suit01/12/2008
Hodder & Stoughton and the author Constance Briscoe have successfully defended themselves against a libel suit brought by Briscoe's own mother, who claimed the 2006 misery memoir Ugly was "a work of fiction".
In a statement issued after the verdict, Hodder & Stoughton said:
We are pleased with the jury's verdict. We are very proud to be Constance Briscoe's publisher. Her books Ugly and Beyond Ugly have touched hundreds of thousands of readers, many of them children. Sadly, as we know from the news over the past few weeks, child abuse is all too common and nothing and no one should ever stand in the way of the truth.
